Carbon Dioxide extinguishers are primarily made of pressurized non-flammable carbon dioxide gas. CO2 extinguishers are easily recognizable since they have hard horns and does not have a pressure gauge. The extinguisher also contains a flexible hose attached to its hard horns. The pressure inside the cannister of the extinguisher is so high that dry ice may form when using the extinguisher. It also contains a valve with a safety release pressure to prevent any bursting of cylinders in situations of fires involving high temperatures. CO2 fire extinguishers should only be used for Class B fires, fires caused my flammable liquid, and Class C fires, fire that were triggered by faulty electrical wiring or circuitry. It is ideal to use in multi-risk fires. The main ingredient of the extinguisher, CO2, will extinguish the flames by displacing oxygen. The pressurized CO2 gas is also cold which also acts as a coolant to the burning fuels. It is important to note that CO2 extinguishers SHOULD NOT BE USED for Class A fires since the CO2 may not be enough to displace oxygen since materials that causes Class A fires can smolder and re-ignite. Laboratories, kitchens, mechanical rooms, rooms with flammable liquids are some establishments should be equipped with a CO2 extinguisher.
