The Importance of Manual Call Points in Fire Alarm Systems

When it comes to protecting lives and property, a reliable fire alarm system is non-negotiable. Among its key components, manual call points (MCPs)—commonly known as break glass units—play a crucial role in early fire detection and response.

What Are Manual Call Points?

MCPs are wall-mounted devices that allow individuals to trigger the fire alarm system manually. By simply pressing or breaking the glass, anyone can activate the alarm and initiate an immediate evacuation—no need to wait for heat or smoke detectors.

Why Manual Call Points Matter in Fire Safety

Automatic detectors are essential, but they aren’t always fast enough. Fires don’t always start near a detector, and delays in detection can cost lives. MCPs allow quick human intervention, speeding up response times and improving evacuation efficiency.

Whether it’s a school, office, shopping mall, hospital, or warehouse, someone on-site may notice signs of fire before sensors do. Manual activation can be the difference between minor damage and major disaster.

Where Should we Install MCPs?

Fire safety regulations, such as BS 5839 and NFPA 72, recommend installing MCPs:

  • Near building exits
  • Along escape routes
  • No more than 45 meters apart

This ensures they’re always within easy reach during emergencies.

MCPs: A Legal and Safety Requirement

Installing MCPs isn’t just smart—it’s often required by fire codes and insurance providers. Regular maintenance and visibility checks also ensure reliability when seconds count.

Final Thoughts

Every effective fire alarm system must include well-placed manual call points. They provide a fast, manual way to raise the alarm, empowering people to act quickly and safely. Don’t overlook them—your building’s fire protection strategy depends on it.
